MY50’s Custom Honda Dax
At MY50, we are dedicated to pushing the boundaries of motorcycle customisation. As an official Webike partner, we’ve joined forces with Webike Japan to create the ultimate “Riders’ Connection,” a hub where enthusiasts can come together to share their passion for motorcycles. One of our latest projects, a custom Honda Dax, showcases the potential of combining top-notch parts with expert craftsmanship. Here’s a closer look at how we transformed this classic bike into a modern marvel.
Revamping the Exhaust System
The heart of any custom build lies in its performance, and for our Honda Dax, we chose the Tanaka Trading Stainless Steel Exhaust specifically designed for the Dax. This exhaust system not only complements the engine and jetting perfectly but also significantly enhances the bike’s performance and sound. The deep, throaty roar of the exhaust is a testament to the power and refinement of this upgrade. To accommodate this system, various foot pegs can be used, providing flexibility and personalisation options for riders.
Upgrading the Swing Arm and Stability
With an engine swap to a more powerful 125cc, the increased speed and torque presented a challenge: the risk of the bike flipping with the stock swing arm. To counter this, we installed a longer swing arm, which is particularly effective in the lower gear range. This modification ensures that the bike remains stable and controllable, even under the enhanced power. Additionally, we installed a longer brake arm to match the extended length of the swing arm, further improving braking efficiency and safety.
Enhancing Front Fork and Brake Kit
Handling the larger engine capacity required an upgrade to the front fork and brake system. We chose the Tanaka Trading Front Fork Drum Brake Kit, which, combined with the longer swing arm, dramatically improves the bike’s stability and handling. This upgrade ensures that the Honda Dax remains responsive and safe, providing a smooth ride regardless of the terrain.
Strengthening the Chain and Drive
A more powerful engine demands a robust drive system. We opted for a DID Standard Series Chain, known for its exceptional functionality and durability. The chain’s gold color adds a touch of elegance, enhancing the bike’s overall aesthetic. To cut the chain to the precise size needed, we used the Minimoto Chain Cutting Tool, ensuring a perfect fit. Maintaining the chain in top condition is crucial for riding performance, and this new chain also extends the life of the sprockets.
Modernising the Mirrors and Indicators
To match the modernised style of the bike, we replaced the stock mirrors with Keio Parts Universal Blue Lens Mirror Squares. These low-down mirrors align with the adjusted riding position and offer better stability at high speeds compared to the traditional long-stem mirrors. Since we upgraded the electrical system to 12V, all indicators needed to be replaced to accommodate this change. We chose the compact MADMAX indicators, which not only give the bike a sleek, modern look but also ensure high visibility for safety.
Upgrading the Electrical System
The original Honda Dax had a 6V electrical system, which we upgraded to a 12V system. This required a complete overhaul of the wiring harness. Given the bike’s poor condition when acquired and the absence of a key, we installed a Minimoto Ignition Switch, providing a reliable and secure ignition system.
Improving Fuel Delivery and Gear Shifting
The traditional Honda Dax had a fuel petcock on the carburettor, which needed to be replaced due to the engine upgrade. We installed an SP Takagawa Fuel Cock, which fits perfectly in the mounting hole previously used by the old air box. With a pod filter in use, the air box was no longer necessary. This petcock features both main and reserve entries, eliminating the need to modify the fuel tank. We also upgraded the old gear shifter to a more modern Takegawa gear shifter, which offers better comfort and an enhanced look compared to the traditional two-arm shifters.
