Goal description

New Zealand’s geothermal landscape may have doubled as Mordor in the Lord of the Rings film trilogy, but the area is far more colourful than the films would have you believe. The volcanic Lake Taupo region includes wildly coloured green crater lakes, turquoise waterfalls, steaming silica terraces of glaring yellow and orange and vast gurgling lakes of equally radioactive hues. The most famous of the latter is Champagne Pool. Better not to quaff this pungent, lime-green bubbly, though; despite the name and a rim sugared with comely orange antimony, gold and silver, it’s laced with arsenic and sizzles at a surface temperature of 75°C.
