This island gem off the west coast of France near La Rochelle is one of the country’s better-kept secrets, but Ile De Re is no stranger to local tourism. Packed with ancient-architectural delights and picturesque towns built around fishing harbours, it is a popular destination for travel-savvy Parisians escaping the city for a weekend. However, the island has still managed to maintain a laidback beach lifestyle and feels far less crowded than, say, Corsica, another popular French island destination.
Cyclists can take to the island’s 60 miles of bike paths, while history buffs will enjoy touring a number of 17th century fortresses or the Abbaye des Châteliers, one of the largest abbeys in France.
Ile De Re also has a thriving beach life. Kids and adults alike will enjoy picking from the wide range of water activities on offer. Head to Le Bois Plage or La Couarde beaches for surf lessons, explore the marshland of the Fier d'Ars or Loidaise coasts in a canoe or live life in the fast lane on a guided Jet Ski tour.
Accommodation ranges from bare-minimum campsites for a handful of euros daily to four star luxury hotels by the sea such as Le Richelieu, whose suites have huge terraces overlooking the coastline.
