Vicky Sonley's goal
Goal name
Battambang, Cambodia
Goal description
The Battambang countryside is a serene medley of rice fields and fruit orchards divided by the Sanker River. The regional capital, also called Battambang, mainly consists of well-preserved French colonial style buildings. Other town attractions include the Phare Ponleu Selpak circus, which helps children to recover from war trauma through activities such as acrobatics and juggling.
Another place of (sobering) historical interest is the killing caves, where the communist Khmer Rouge regime that ruled the country in the late 1970s killed its real or imagined enemies. The Ek Phnom temple, an 11th century grouping of sanctuaries covered in carvings, is a less grisly attraction.
